Ruth Strathen

Ruth E. Strathen, 84, of Clearfield died on Friday, May 6, 2011 at Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College.

She was born on April 15, 1927 in New Kensington, a daughter of the late Peter and Della (Rodnite) Paul.

Mrs. Strathen was once employed at the Clearfield Hospital as coordinator of volunteers. Prior to that, she worked as a clerk at Bloom Insurance Co., Clearfield as well as the Clearfield County Court House Assessment Office. She also was a switchboard operator for Bell Telephone, New Kensington.
Mrs. Strathen was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Clearfield. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Clearfield Chapter #379 and a volunteer with the Reach to Recovery for Breast Cancer Survivors group. Earlier in life, Mrs. Strathen enjoyed being a Girl Scout leader and a mother advisor for the Rainbow Girls. She will be remembered as being the 'solid rock and foundation' of the family and devoted to her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is survived by two daughters, Judy Kaufman and husband Gerald of Clearfield and Nancy Rowden of Lake Havasu City, AZ; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Rowden of Jacksonville, FL, Brian Kaufman and fiancé Jill Piacente of Topanga, CA, Eric Kaufman of Los Angeles, CA, Michael Strathen of Woodland and Jennifer Strathen Stiglitz and husband Nick of Cranberry Township; two great grandchildren, Jayden and Luke Strathen; and a brother Richard T. Paul and wife Marilyn of Port St. Lucie, FL.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John F. Strathen on March 14, 2010 and whom she married July 17, 1948 in New Kensington; a son James P. Strathen, and a brother William F. Paul.

A memorial service will be held at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Clearfield on Tuesday at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Dr. Robert L. Rupp officiating. Interment will follow in the Crown Crest Memorial Park, Hyde.

Friends will be received at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Clearfield on Monday from 2-4 & 6-8 PM and at church on Tuesday from 10-11:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 121 S. 2nd Street, Clearfield; the American Cancer Society, 26 S. 2nd Street, Clearfield; or to the Joseph and Elizabeth Shaw Public Library, 1 S. Front Street, Clearfield.
