Seeing the Pirates play at Forbes Field

One memory of Pete that comes to mind is the time he and some friends took a school bus load of us area kids out to Forbes Field in Pittsburgh to see the Pirates play ball. This would have had to have been in the mid 1960's.

It was a super big thing for us youngsters who were  just getting to love the sport of baseball to see the pros play the game.

To see Roberto Clemente, Matty Alou, Bill Mazeroski, and Willie Stargell play ball live was quite an inspiration to us young kids. They were larger than life legends and I remember that we were all so impressed.

It was a banner day for us country boys going to the big city, where many of the people didn't look like us or even talk like us. I'll always remember Pete giving us a briefing before we got there on that very thing.  It was like a whole new world to experience, and an experience I can thank Pete for.

We were very fortunate to have people as good as Pete and Martha Solley for neighbors, and it made for many great memories such as this bus trip in our youth. Pete, being a barber, always had a way to tell us a story and make an impresssion. Yound minds need good impressions, and we were fortunate to be molded by charactors like Pete whose examples were noble ones. The kind everybody kid NEEDS but all too often does not get these days.

THANKS OLD FRIEND, for being such a great guy and example in our youth. We are blessed to have known you!
